What’s Going on Here?

A lot of times when blogging one is tempted to offer explanations of things going on in nature.  I am tempted to do that sometimes as well.  However, I find that there are times when I observe something and just don’t have an answer.

For example, yesterday I noticed this:  On an American elm tree there were about three leaves that seemed to have an unusual amount of activity.  Half a dozen or so flies were crawling above and below the leaf.  I could not really see what they were doing.  They all seemed similar to this one:

There were three or four individuals of this species of wasp:

The flies seemed to avoid the wasps–at least avoided bumping into them.  The wasps seemed to ignore the flies.  I could not identify a particular activity that either was doing–eating, mating, or something else.  Most of the leaves on the tree did not have similar activity–all of the flies and wasps were on two or three leaves right close together.

Something was going on.  I just have no clue what it was.
