I did some butterfly chasing this afternoon and got a photograph of this painted lady, Vanessa cardui. Painted ladies can be very common but there aren’t so many right now.
Butterfly photography, at least the way I do it, requires a great deal of stalking. In order to get a good picture I get within a foot or even six inches from the butterfly. I have to move very slowly in order to avoid spooking them. Right now one of the big obstacles is that there are a number of tiny grasshoppers which I spook. The grasshoppers have jumped right into a butterfly I was stalking on more than one occasion. Then all that slow movement goes to waste.
I have similar issues with my dog.
