Red admirals

Late in the evenings red admirals, Vanessa atalanta, are very active.  They find a perch high on a sunny tree or on the side of a building and challenge anything that flies by them.  If that happens to be another red admiral the butterflies chase each other in tight circles until they tire of the activity, then one goes back to the perch.  Does this qualify as territorial behavior?  I’m not really sure.

Brilliant picture! I’ve been wandering what the tight circles in flight are all about myself.
