Iowa Wildflower Week, May 1-7, 2011

I got an email today saying that the Iowa Native Plant Society is hosting an Iowa Wildflower Week, which will be May 1-7, 2011.

For the next three or four days I will be posting photographs of wildflowers.  Why?

1.  Wildflower week.

2.  Posting photos is easy.

3.  I will be kind of busy for the next three or four days with some family stuff.

This is sharp-lobed hepatica.

Oh, yeah:

4.  We had some warm weather before it turned cold again.  I have spring fever pretty bad.

Lovely. I have no problem with having to view wildflowers here. Hope your spring fever sees a cure in the near future.

Good morning! This is a bit of a “stab-in-the-dark” request for help. My husband and I will be traveling to Iowa (Des Moines area) and MN (Rochester) area soon. We would like to capture some wildflower photos. Because it’s been such a strange winter/spring, we’re not sure when would be the best time to come. We have a lot of flexibility in the next three weeks. Do you have any advice for us?

    • The woodland wildflowers are out now. The cool weather did not seem to affect them too badly. If you are in the Des Moines area itself I would suggest Brown’s Woods or Walnut Woods. If you can get up to the Boone area, The Ledges State Park is really good. To find the best woodland wildflowers in Iowa you need to get to some of the state preserves. I don’t know what your route to Rochester MN is, but if you can swing by Bixby State Park in Edgewood, Iowa I would recommend that one. Prairies aren’t too spectacular now, but within three weeks some of the earlier wildflowers should be blooming in them.

Many thanks! What a generous gift your message is! I grew up in Mason City. Haven’t been to Ledges in YEARS! We will definitely check out the places you suggested.

        Best regards,
        Rosemary Williams
