Save the Poweshiek Skipper

Several years ago I worked with Grinnell College on a project that intended to promote awareness of the Poweshiek skipper, Oarisma poweshiek and also promote its conservation by re-introducing it from counties in the northern part of Iowa to Poweshiek and adjacent counties.

Its near disappearance from the state and other issues put an end to the project.

Tomorrow I intend to leave for a conference dealing with the conservation of the species.

Here is a poster left over from the earlier effort.

That is sweet. I especially like the fringe on the sun, and the surprised look in the eyes of the skipper.

  2. Hope to hear this little beauty is saved! Shared it on my FB along with today’s story in the Burllngton Iowa newspaper, The Hawkeye, on the plight of these cute little butterflies, remnants of the vast prairies that used to cover our country’s midsection. Used your sweet picture in the shared messages 😉
