I drove up to a fen in northern Iowa with my friend Ty today. I had a tip that Baltimore checkerspots, Euphydras phaeton, could be found there.
The tip was right. Thanks, Mark. This is a new butterfly for me.
I also saw this deformed great spangled fritillary. I think when it emerged from its chrysalis it was disturbed by something, and its wings hardened in this position.
Deformed as it was, it was still quite striking.
