First Insect of the Year

We still have snow on the ground in places. I walked around a little bit today, looking for insects.  It is still not warm yet,  just a few degrees above freezing.

I hoped to find something–a small fly, perhaps, or maybe a beetle.  Here is the only insect I found.

I posted a photo to Bugguide.net.  It seems to be the northern green-striped grasshopper, Chortophaga viridifasciata

This is the first year that the first insect I have seen outdoors is a grasshopper.  You never really know what nature is going to hand out.
