It’s Not Just About Pretty Flowers

Butterflies are attracted to flowers.  Butterflies are often associated with flowers.

But they are not just attracted to flowers.

I took this photo a number of years ago of four viceroys drinking the juices of a rotten apple.

These northern pearly-eyes are attracted to sap leaking from the bark of a bush.

This eastern tailed-blue was attracted to something else.

I have seen a photo, taken by one of my friends, which had 32 or 33 hackberry emperors all crowded on one scat.

Great images as always; the Monarchs on fruit reminded me that putting out over-ripe bananas at this time of year often attracts late summer butterflies seeking fuel. Haven’t yet seen any on ‘scat’ though.
