We have a little pond that totally dried up last year. It has never been a big pond, and we haven’t had fish in it.
Still, it’s a great pond for frogs. We have five species that I am confident I have heard, and maybe six. Chorus frogs are always the first we hear, but we also hear American toads, gray tree frogs, leopard frogs and cricket frogs. Some years I thought that I heard spring peepers, but I was never sure.
The pond now has water in it, but it is far from full. At least the frogs and dragonflies will have a fighting chance.
The snow we had a few days ago has mostly melted, but the days remain cool–only a few degrees above freezing for highs. I am ready for spring.
Maybe the frogs are too.
