There is an interesting discussion over at the fly obsession blog. Entomologist and dipterist Brian Brown is asking for suggestions for the title of “Most Beautiful Fly in the World.”
“Beauty” and “Fly” are usually not used in the same sentence, and when they are fly is a verb and not a noun meaning a member of the diptera.
But many flies are quite beautiful. I suggested Heterostylum robustum for the title.
Scathophaga is beautiful, but probably not quite up to the title, and it is quite common.
I have to confess my favorite is Myiomyrmica fenestrata, although to appreciate its beauty requires a little time.
And how about Euthycera arcuata?
How’s that for beauty?
